Job's Answer to Purposeless Waiting
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
Let's just be honest for a second. Some of us are tired. Not just sleepy-tired, but that deep-in-the-bones tired from carrying other people's hard things for a long, long time. You know the feeling. You're the reliable one, the one who shows up. But some days, it just feels like you're in a holding pattern, waiting for a relief that isn't coming. It's not a complaint, straight up, it's just a confession. What do we do when the waiting itself becomes the weight?
All the days of my appointed time will I wait. — Job 14:14The Briefing
Job says he'll wait for his 'appointed time.' And honestly, that can sound a lot like resignation. Like giving up. Just enduring until the clock runs out. We know that feeling, don't we? The exhaustion that comes not from a single hard day, but from a long, hard season. It's the sense that we're just in a holding pattern, circling a life we can't quite land. We think if we just hang on, relief will come. But what if the hanging on, the waiting itself, is the point? Look, the Bible is clear: our suffering isn't for nothing. It's not just a void we have to cross. The New Testament writers tell us that our earthly trials actually give a taste, a depth, to the glory that's coming. The rest will feel more like rest because we've known what it is to work until our bones ache. And our fellowship with Christ becomes real in a new way, because He knew suffering, too. He was baptized in it, right here among us. To share in that is, somehow, an honor. But here's the part that changes everything. Our waiting isn't just for our benefit. It's for God's glory. A tried saint, one old writer said, is like a well-cut diamond in the King's crown. Nothing shows off the skill of a craftsman like putting his work through a severe trial and watching it hold. We are God's workmanship. Our lives, especially when they're hard, are the places where His glory reaches its zenith. Our story has a magnetic pull toward His purpose. So when we're worn out, when we feel like we're just waiting for the end, we're actually doing something weighty. We're showing the world, and all of heaven, the enduring quality of the God who made us and holds us. Our waiting isn't empty. It’s a testimony.
⚔️ Your Mission
One thing today... think of someone you know who is in a long, hard season of waiting. The first name that came to mind. Call them. Don't text. Let them hear your voice and say, "I was thinking about you, and this verse came to mind: 'All the days of my appointed time will I wait.'" Then just be quiet and listen. If that's not where you are today, think of the person you've been avoiding because their struggle feels too heavy. Send them that verse with these words: "I'm sorry I've been distant. I'm with you in this.""Dear Lord, we're tired of performing. We're tired of pretending this waiting doesn't hurt. Forgive us for seeing this time as empty, as a punishment we have to endure. Help us to believe that even in our exhaustion, You are being glorified. Let our tired hands and scarred hearts be a testamen"Tomorrow’s Eb, in your inboxOne short devotional each morning, audio included. Unsubscribe any time.

Read the records of the community below.SteveNovember 04, 2026Yep. This is it. Folks forget that sometimes. Had a young guy on the crew just last week, felt like his progress was stalled. Told him sometimes you gotta keep laying brick, even if you can’t see the whole wall yet. Trust the blueprint. Waiting isn’t wasted time. It’s building time. Good word. 👍

All the days of my appointed time will I wait.Job 14:14
Job says this from a place of intense personal suffering. He’s talking about waiting through a difficult season he believes has been assigned to him. This isn't just about passing time; it's a statement about endurance through a long trial.
This period of waiting isn't seen as meaningless. The hardship on earth makes the future peace of heaven feel even sweeter. It also creates a shared experience with Jesus, who suffered, too. Ultimately, a person's faith holding up under a severe test is a tribute to the God who made them.
The phrase "appointed time" is often translated in modern Bibles as "hard service." So in plain language, Job is saying, "I will wait through all the days of my struggle until my relief finally comes."

Wow, this is so timely. Exactly what I needed to read this morning. That whole concept of ‘purposeless waiting’ really hit differently. It’s so easy to just… drift, even when you’re outwardly doing all the things. I mean, after an early morning workout today, my mind was still trying to optimize my entire week, haha. Our pastor just finished a series on cultivating presence and *intentionalliving, and this devotional feels so perfectly aligned with that. It’s not just about enduring the wait, but finding clarity and purpose *inthe waiting itself. What a powerful reframe. Definitely something to keep top-of-mind for staying grounded. Sharing this for sure!
