The Name God Claims You With
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
Hey there. It's Saturday. The coffee is hitting just right in the quiet of the kitchen. And maybe you see it out of the corner of your eye,a superhero cape draped over a chair, a little pirate hat on the counter. Ready for tonight. It's fun, right? A whole night to pretend to be someone else. But it also pokes at a deeper question. When all the masks come off, who are we really? When the fun is over, who do we actually belong to?
I will be their God, and they shall be my people. — 2 Corinthians 6:16The Briefing
This isn't a negotiation. It's not an offer on the table. It's a declaration from the God of the universe. He's not saying, 'I might be their God, if they clean up their act.' He's not saying, 'They could be my people, if they try a little harder.' He just says it flat. 'I will be their God, and they shall be my people.' It's a statement of fact. A claim of ownership. Think about that. In a world where we feel like we belong to our mortgage, our job title, or the anxieties that keep us up at night, God plants a flag. He says, 'No. They're mine.' This isn't a casual claim. It's one He paid for with the blood of His Son. He purchased us. We're His property, not in the sense of a thing to be used, but a treasure to be held. The Lord's portion, the Bible calls it. His inheritance. And honestly? That changes everything. It means our identity isn't up for grabs. It's not something we assemble from our successes and failures. It's something given. It's something declared over us. When God claims us, He also commits to us. He provides the trellis for our lives to grow on. He's the one doing the deadheading, cutting away the things that choke out our life with Him. His presence, His claim, that's the fertilizer for a soul that feels barren. We don't have to wonder who we are. He's already told us whose we are. And that, right there, is the most solid ground we will ever stand on.
⚔️ Your Mission
So where does this leave us? Let's ground this truth in our bodies today. Try this: Sometime today, just stand up. Plant your feet flat on the floor. And say these four words out loud, not in a whisper: 'I am His people.' Feel the solid ground under you as you say it. Let your body learn the truth your mind is wrestling with. If that's not for you, then just do this: sit down and open your hands, palms up, in your lap. For sixty seconds. It's a physical posture that says, 'I am not grasping for an identity. I am ready to receive the one I've been given.'"Lord Jesus, we belong to so many things that are not You. Our work, our worries, our pasts. We confess we let them own us. But you declare something different over us. You say we are Yours. Help us to unclench our fists from all the other false identities we're holding onto. Help us simply rest in the fact that we are Your people, and You are our God. Let that be enough for us today. In Jesus' name... Amen."Tomorrow’s Eb, in your inboxOne short devotional each morning, audio included. Unsubscribe any time.

I will be their God, and they shall be my people.2 Corinthians 6:16
God is the one speaking in this verse. He's laying out the terms of an intensely personal relationship. While He's the God of the entire world, this promise isn't for everyone. It's for a specific group of people He calls His own.
The phrase "My people" is all about ownership. God isn't just their ruler; He's claiming them as His special possession. They are His chosen portion, the people He has bought, brought close to Himself, and set His heart on. It's a statement about a unique and everlasting love that can't be diminished or broken.
