The End of Your Spiritual Independence
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
Take it easy as you get started today. You know that specific kind of irritation when you're trying to fix something simple, and it just won't work? The Wi-Fi router that needs resetting for the third time. The piece of flat-pack furniture where the holes don't line up. You can feel the frustration building in your chest, because you think, 'I should be able to handle this.' You feel completely on your own with the problem. That feeling, that it’s all on us,is exactly where a lot of us live spiritually, too.
He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever. — John 14:16The Briefing
Jesus says this to his friends just hours before everything falls apart. He’s about to leave, and He knows their world is about to shrink down to the size of a locked room. So He makes them a promise. Not just that they’ll be okay, but how they’ll be okay. He says, I’m asking the Father to give you another Helper, a Comforter, who will stay with you forever. Now, we’ve heard this. But we live like it’s not true. We act like God’s help is something we have to summon. Like He’s a distant landlord we call when the plumbing breaks. We try to fix it ourselves first. We get the tools out. We make it worse. Then, exhausted, we finally make the call. That’s how we treat the Holy Spirit. An emergency contact. A last resort. But Jesus’ promise here is defiant. It pushes back hard against our spiritual independence. He says the Comforter will abide. That means He moves in. He’s not a visitor. He’s a resident. The presence of God with us isn't a relic from the day of Pentecost, something to look back on. It’s our current, living legacy. So why do we still feel so alone in the struggle? Honestly? Because we forget. We run ahead. We act on our own strength and then wonder why we’re so tired. We don’t recognize His presence because we’re not looking for it. We’re too busy trying to handle it. The work isn’t to earn His help. The work is the preservation of our awareness that His help is already here. He is the present Immanuel,God with us. Not just in the big moments, but in the Saturday errands and the quiet anxiety at three in the morning. He’s not waiting for our invitation. He’s already home.
⚔️ Your Mission
I want you to try something today. Take a ten-minute walk. No music, no podcast. With every few steps, just say, 'You are here.' Not as a question or a request, but as a statement of fact. If a walk isn't your reality today, do the same thing on your commute or while washing dishes. Let the rhythm of the task become the rhythm of acknowledging the Comforter who is already with you."Heavenly Father, there’s someone on our hearts today. Someone we’ve been meaning to call, someone we’re worried about. We bring them before You now. We ask that the Comforter You sent for us would be powerfully present with them. Meet them in their anxiety, in their loneliness, in their confusion. Remind them that they are not on their own. Let them feel Your abiding presence in a real way today. Go where we cannot go. Do what we cannot do. Be their renewal and their anchor. In Jesus' name... Amen."Tomorrow’s Eb, in your inboxOne short devotional each morning, audio included. Unsubscribe any time.

Read the records of the community below.CalebOctober 29, 2026Almost scrolled past this, no joke. Had to wrangle both kids into the car this morning, total zoo. But this “end of spiritual independence” thing… man, that actually hit different. Legit. Like, trying to manage my own spiritual life like it’s another project I gotta solo? That’s what I’ve been doing. Always trying to plan out my “deliverables” and metrics for God. Real talk, it’s exhausting trying to be the spiritual project manager *andthe worker bee. Need to hand over some of those tasks. Feels like I’m always trying to optimize my own process, when maybe the whole point is letting someone else take point for once. That’s fire.

He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever.John 14:16
Jesus said this to his disciples right before his crucifixion, preparing them for the time when he'd no longer be physically with them. He was promising them the one who would take his place as their guide and helper after he ascended to heaven.
The "Comforter" Jesus promised is the Holy Spirit. His arrival marked a new era. First, God the Father revealed Himself to the patriarchs, and then Jesus walked the earth in person. Now, the Holy Spirit has come to live in and with God's people. He isn't a temporary gift—Jesus promised he would stay with them forever.

This is so good. 🌿 That “spiritual independence” piece… I’m just sitting with that so hard. It feels like a chord I’ve been trying to resolve in my head. …yeah.
