The Strangest Promise Jesus Ever Made
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
Hey, friend. You ever had your mapping app just die on you? You're in a part of town you don't know, you're already late, and suddenly the screen freezes. The blue dot vanishes. And for a second, there's that sinking feeling of being genuinely lost. We build our lives on systems we expect to work, and when they fail, it's a shock. We assume a smooth journey is the default. But what if the One who drew the map told us from the start that the road would be rough?
In the world ye shall have tribulation. — John 16:33The Briefing
That one line from Jesus is so stark, isn't it? It's not a maybe. It's not 'if you're not careful.' It's a guarantee. Jesus is basically telling his closest friends, 'Look, in this world, you're going to have trouble. count on it.' And honestly, there's something strangely comforting about that. Because we spend so much energy trying to audit our lives to figure out what we did wrong when things go sideways. We assume a smooth ride is the sign of God's favor, and a bumpy one is a sign of His absence. But Jesus flips that completely. He says the trouble isn't a bug in the system, it's a feature of the territory we're passing through. Think about why. We're told to look in four directions to understand this. Look within, and our own hearts are still a mess of sin and self. Look down, and there's an enemy who absolutely hates that we're trying to get home to God. Look around, and we're living in a world that doesn't share our values. We're strangers here. Sojourners. We're trying to merge onto a highway where everyone else is driving by a completely different set of rules. It's no wonder we feel the friction. There's always a blind spot. But then, we're told to look upward. And that's the key. This whole journey, with all its trouble, is a refining process. God is using the heat and the pressure to make us more like His Son. He's not surprised by the tribulation. He's using it. He's not promising to airlift us out of the enemy's country, but He is promising to walk with us through every single ambush on the way. The trouble doesn't mean we're lost. It means we're not home yet.
⚔️ Your Mission
Here is how we walk this out today. Since trouble is a given, our peace comes from creating pockets of rest in the trouble, not by waiting for it to end. So today, block fifteen minutes on your calendar. Label it 'Do Not Schedule.' Protect that time and do nothing productive. If that's not where you are, find five minutes. Go to your car, set a timer, and just breathe. Refuse to solve a single problem during that time. This is how we practice being sojourners, by trusting the One who knows the way home."Gracious God, thank you for telling us the truth. Thank you for not promising an easy life, but for promising Your presence in the hard one. We're grateful that trouble isn't a sign that You've abandoned us, but a confirmation that we're not home yet. Help us find our rest in You today, not in our circumstances. Remind us that You are with us in the struggle. In Jesus' name... Amen."Tomorrow’s Eb, in your inboxOne short devotional each morning, audio included. Unsubscribe any time.

In the world ye shall have tribulation.John 16:33
Jesus is speaking to his followers, telling them what to expect from life in a broken world. He's not presenting a possibility, but a certainty. The word "tribulation" means serious trouble, and Jesus is explaining that it's a guaranteed part of the experience for those who follow him.
This hardship comes at a person from every direction. It’s the friction of being purified and made holy. It’s spiritual opposition from an enemy who won't let his former subjects go without a fight. It’s the hostility of a world that’s at odds with God. And finally, it's the internal battle with our own sinful hearts.
In modern English, the statement is blunt: "In this world, you will have trouble." It’s a clear-eyed assessment of the life that lies ahead.
