The Prayer That Keeps You in the Fight
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
It's good to be with you for a couple of minutes today. You know, you can carry the title of 'the strong one' for so long that you forget you never asked for it. You're the stable one, the one with the answers, the one who has it together. And then the door closes, and you're alone in the quiet of your car or your kitchen, and you just think… I'm so tired. I don't want to be strong anymore. I just want out. There's this deep, quiet wish for an escape from it all. And it turns out, Jesus has a prayer for that feeling.
I pray not that Thou shouldst take them out of the world. — John 17:15The Briefing
It’s one of the most honest prayers we have, even if we only whisper it in the dark: 'God, get me out of here.' We want the escape hatch. The exit ramp. The final peace that comes when the fight is finally over. And we tell ourselves it’s a holy desire, right? We want to be with Jesus. But if we’re honest, a lot of the time, we just want to be done with the trouble. We want to escape the pain, the exhaustion, the feeling of being the one person holding it all together. And then we hear Jesus praying for us. And His prayer is the opposite of ours. He stands before the Father and says, point-blank, 'I'm not asking You to take them out of the world.' Wait, what? It feels like a rejection. But it's not. It's a reassignment. Jesus isn't praying for our extraction; He's praying for our protection right where we are. He knows this world has terrible acoustics, full of noise and pain. But He's not trying to get us out of the concert hall. He's asking the Father to keep us from the evil one so we can play our part in a much larger score. Our presence here is needed. You being exactly where you are today, in that job, in that family, in that neighborhood, is not an accident. It's an assignment. We think our suffering is a sign that something's gone wrong. But what if it's the very place where God's strength gets its greatest amplification? What if the goal isn't to fly away and be at rest, but to glorify God by staying at our post, right in the middle of the conflict and the mess? He doesn't leave us alone here. His prayer is our protection. We're not stuck. We're stationed.
⚔️ Your Mission
Here’s the part that asks for courage. Pick the one thing today that makes you want to tap out, the task, the conversation, the recurring frustration. Look at it and say this out loud: 'This is my post. God, keep me in it.' Reframe it from a prison to an assignment. If that’s not where you are, think of one person who is quietly benefitting from you staying in the fight. Send them a simple, encouraging text. Let your presence be the mission."Jesus, we're tired. Some of us are just bone-weary and we want to be done. We confess that our desire to escape is often more about our comfort than about Your company. Thank You for praying for us to be kept, not removed. Give us the strength to stay at our post, right here, today. Help us to trust that our placement is Your purpose. In Jesus' name... Amen."Tomorrow’s Eb, in your inboxOne short devotional each morning, audio included. Unsubscribe any time.

Read the records of the community below.ClaireOctober 29, 2026There is something about this idea of steady prayer… not loud, but deep. It reminds me of the way cedars grip the rock face in a Vancouver downpour. That quiet strength, like a certain earthy green I was trying to mix this morning for a sketch.
Keeps coming back to me, this feeling. Like a calm, holding hand in the wind. ✨

I pray not that Thou shouldst take them out of the world.John 17:15
Jesus is praying for his followers just before his crucifixion. He knows he's about to leave them in a world that's hostile to his message. While he wants them to eventually join him in heaven, this specific request is about what should happen to them in the meantime, while they're still on earth.
This line is a direct statement against the idea of believers being immediately rescued from earthly hardship. It's a common feeling to want to escape suffering, but Jesus doesn't ask for his people to be taken away from it all. Instead, he prays for them to remain in the world, where they are needed, until God's timing is right for them to come home.
In modern English, this phrase is usually translated as, "My prayer is not that you take them out of the world."

Ugh, yes! Carpool line sanity check needed right now, holy smokes. Trying to butter these rolls for the potluck and thinking about this ‘fight’ idea. Because it IS a fight. Every. Single. Day. Especially when Silas just smeared peanut butter on the wall. Can I get a witness? Sometimes just getting through the next hour feels like a victory. Amen.
