🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

Good to have you back. You know that one drawer in the kitchen? The one with the handle that's been broken for years? You get so used to it, you develop a little technique, a special way to hook your fingers underneath to get it open. It’s broken, but it's a familiar broken. We do that with our lives, too. We get used to our own broken patterns, our own recurring failures. We've been this person longer than we want to admit. The pattern has a name, and we know the name. It’s become part of the furniture. We stop seeing it as broken and just start seeing it as.. ours.

O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? — Psalm 4:2

    The Briefing

The Psalmist’s question just hangs in the air, doesn't it? 'How long will you turn my glory into shame?' He’s basically asking, how long are you going to take the most beautiful, weighty thing in the universe and treat it like it's worthless? It's a question dripping with grief. And it’s not about an abstract idea. God’s glory became a person. He sent His Son, the very brightness of His own being, into the world. And what was the world's response? We gave Him a parade of honor, where He was forced to carry His own instrument of execution. We offered Him a drink of honor, vinegar and gall on a sponge. We assigned him a guard of honor, brutal soldiers who gambled for his clothes while he died. And we built him a throne of honor, a bloody cross, raised between two thieves. That cross was the ultimate human statement. It was us, looking at the glory of God in the flesh and saying, 'This is what we think of You.' We took the perfect grain of heaven and forced it into the twisted groove of our own brokenness. But there's a deeper current running here.. Because God refuses to let our shame have the last word. He takes the very thing we designed for maximum dishonor, the cross, and makes it the hinge of all history. He makes it the place of ultimate glory. He takes our most shameful act and turns it into His most glorious provision. The gospel is the stunning reversal where God puts a clamp on our rebellion and declares the finishing work of redemption is done. He doesn't just forgive our tendency to make a mockery of His glory. He redeems it. He takes the shame we hand Him and hands back grace we could never earn.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

Let's put this into practice. The world turns glory into shame. We're called to do the opposite. I want you to try this: think of one person today who might feel overlooked or dishonored. Look them in the eye and speak a blessing of honor over them. Don't just compliment them. Name a specific quality you see in them that reflects God's glory. Say something like, 'I am so grateful for the steadfastness I see in you.' Speak honor where the world is silent.
"Jesus, the world is so loud. It’s so full of shame and noise. Quiet our hearts for a moment. Forgive us for the ways we, too, have dishonored Your glory, by ignoring it, by cheapening it, by trading it for our own comfort. Open our eyes to see the honor You deserved and the grace You gave instead. Help us become people who speak honor and not shame. In Jesus' name... Amen."

Man, that’s real talk right there. All this talk about giving honor, but what are we actually doing? Doing. You know what I mean? Easy to say it, whole ‘nother thing to put in work on the block. That’s it right there. Been wrestling with that all week, no cap. Kids watchin’. 🔥

O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame?Psalm 4:2

Though this psalm was written long before Jesus, it's often read as a question he asks of mankind. He's looking at the events of his own crucifixion and asking, "How long will you people take everything that is glorious about me and twist it into something shameful?"

The phrase "turn my glory into shame" points to the specific ways his honor was turned into disgrace. His royal procession was the walk to his execution, carrying his own cross. His throne was that cross, a place of public humiliation. Even his "guard of honor" was a squad of soldiers gambling for his clothes.
