Peter's Argument Against Emptiness
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
Thanks for showing up. It's Friday. I saw another one of those articles this week about the damage of comparison, how we're all measuring our ordinary days against someone else's highlight reel. And it's true, right? You can be working hard, doing good work, and still feel like you're falling behind. You see their momentum, their success, and the internal math just stings. It can make you feel like you're made of different, lesser stuff. Like your seed is somehow.. corruptible.
Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible. — 1 Peter 1:23The Briefing
Peter isn't trying to be poetic here. He's making a statement of fact. In plain language, he's saying: you've been reborn from a source that doesn't decay, doesn't break down, doesn't have an expiration date. It's permanent. It's forever. The world's way of building an identity is based on 'corruptible seed.' It's built on things that fade. Our job performance. Our follower count. Our physical appearance. Our bank account. And we get so used to this system that we start to believe it's the only one that exists. We think our value is something we have to build from the outside in, piece by fragile piece. But Peter says God works the other way around. From the inside out. He plants something new in us, an 'incorruptible seed.' A divine nature. The commentary I was reading this morning called it a 'royal dignity.' It says we're descendants of the King of kings, earth's truest aristocracy. Think about that. Our identity isn't based on what we've achieved. It's based on our pedigree. We belong to His family. This isn't about pride. It's not about walking around with our chests puffed out. It's about a quiet, settled confidence in who God says we are. This identity is the fixed point on our life's chart. Our feelings, our failures, our good days and bad days, they're like the weather. They change. But our core identity in Christ? It doesn't. And when we feel lost, when the comparison game tells us we're not enough, we need a course correction. We need to grab the rudder and steer back to this one, foundational truth: we are born of something that cannot be corrupted. And that changes everything.
⚔️ Your Mission
Okay. Our royal nature should change how we treat each other. Pick one relationship that feels walled-off right now and take a step toward reconciliation today. Show up, call, or send the message that says, 'We're on the same team.' If that's not where you are, write a real letter by hand spelling out that same truth. You don't have to send it yet, but you do have to write it. Let's start living like the family we actually are."Heavenly Father, we lift up one person to You right now, by name. The one whose face came to mind. We ask You to quiet the noise for them today. Remind them of who they truly are, born of an incorruptible seed, a member of Your royal family. Help us to love them not from our own limited capacity, but out of the shared identity we have in Christ. Give us the courage to tear down a wall today. In Jesus' name... Amen."Tomorrow’s Eb, in your inboxOne short devotional each morning, audio included. Unsubscribe any time.

Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible.1 Peter 1:23
Peter wrote this to scattered Christians, urging them to love each other deeply. He wasn't giving them a new command, but a new reason. He grounded his whole argument in the new nature they all shared—a nature they received from God when they were born again.
"Corruptible seed" refers to our physical birth, which leads to a life that fades and eventually ends. The "incorruptible seed," on the other hand, is the divine and permanent life God plants in a person. Peter sees this as a new pedigree, a royal lineage that comes directly from God himself. It's a nature that can't decay and sets up a destiny that lasts forever.
In other words, you've been given a new birth. It didn't come from a physical source that can spoil or die, but from a divine source that is eternal.

Building something real. That’s the whole deal. This emptiness talk? Spot on. Reminds me of folks trying to build on sand, or cutting corners on a foundation just to get it done fast. Happens all the time on sites. You put in the work, use the right materials, you get something that lasts. True for faith, too. Can’t just be pretty on the outside. Has to be solid from the ground up, no slick finishes. Been wrestling with a leaky faucet in the utility room all morning, same principle. Fix it right or you’re doing it again next week. That is it.
