The Anchor We Leave on the Deck

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

It's Wednesday. Let's dig in. You know that novel on your nightstand? The one you were so excited to start, but the bookmark hasn't moved in three weeks. It’s not that you don't want it. It's just.. the energy isn't there. For so long, life was all urgency, and now that the crisis has passed, you don't know how to stop running. You have the resource, the story waiting for you, but you're too tired to even engage. It's a strange kind of numbness, isn't it?

    A very present help. — Psalm 46:1

    The Briefing

The psalmist says God is a 'very present help.' And we hear that, and we nod. Of course. But what does present really mean? It doesn't just mean available. It means here. Now. In the room. It’s the difference between having a fire extinguisher in the building and having one in your hands while the kitchen is on fire. And honestly? Most of the time we treat Jesus like He's a beautiful, antique fire extinguisher mounted behind glass. We admire it. We're thankful for it. We point it out to our friends. But we never break the glass. We never actually use Him for the smoke filling the room. He becomes a show-thing, a decoration for our faith. There's this old commentary that says there's nothing Christ dislikes more than His people making a show-thing of Him. He loves to be employed. The more burdens we put on His shoulders, the more we actually understand who He is. Think about that. He isn't honored by our independence. He's honored by our dependence. We feel the undertow of a bad week pulling us out to sea, and we just keep rowing harder. We feel the rust of an old guilt, and we try to scrub it off ourselves. All while the strongest anchor we could ever imagine just sits on the deck. We look at it, we talk about its strength, but we don't throw it overboard. We're exhausted from trying to fight the drift on our own. He's right there, a very present help, waiting for us to put some weight on Him. He's not a future rescue. He's not a past event. He is present help for the exhaustion you feel right now.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

Today, let's practice using our real Help. The next time you feel the pull toward a distraction, the phone scroll, the snack, the show, pivot. Don't do it. Use that two-minute craving to actually ask God for the restoration you really need. If that feels too abstract: take the five bucks you would've spent on that afternoon coffee and give it to the first person you see who needs it more. Train your hands to reach for a different kind of help.
"Heavenly Father, we confess we've made a decoration out of a deliverer. We admire Your strength but we rely on our own. We talk about Your grace but we try to fix ourselves. We've left the anchor on the deck while we exhaust ourselves fighting the drift. Forgive us. Teach us what it means to actually lean on You, to put our full weight on You this afternoon, with this problem, in this conversation. Let us feel the relief of Your real and present help. In Jesus' name... Amen."

The anchor left on the deck suggests a burden carried rather than a security deployed. One considers the admonition in the Prayer Book to “cast all your care upon Him, for He careth for you.” It is a heavy thing, an anchor, and perhaps we are invited to consider where our true moorings lie. This thought arrived as the bells of St. Mary’s rang for Evensong this long Saturday afternoon.

    Yours faithfully, Timothy

man, the anchor on the deck idea… wild. like, why would you even *dothat? it kinda feels like what i’m trying to figure out, you know? got this whole new thing, but my default setting is still trying to white-knuckle everything. i do not even know how to say this but it’s like having a life vest but still trying to swim with both hands tied. so what’s the actual move? how do you actually… drop it?

You don't have to carry it alone.

The Prayer Wall is a space to lay down your burdens and let the community stand witness with you.

    A very present help.Psalm 46:1

This line describes God's help as something meant to be used, not just admired. The blessings He offers aren't set aside for a special occasion. They're available for whatever you're facing in the present moment.

The phrase emphasizes that God isn't a distant figure. He's available right now for any kind of trouble you bring to Him, whether it's grief, guilt, weakness, or fear. He isn't a keepsake to be looked at; He's a resource to be used and a strength to be leaned on in the here and now.
