The Spiritual Bankruptcy of a Good Week

    June 13, 2026

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

Glad you’re here. You’re doing better than you think. It's Saturday. And maybe for a second, things are quiet. The only sound is the low hum of the air conditioner, the gentle tumble of the dryer. It’s the sound of things working, of things being under control. We hold so many things so tightly, don't we? Believing our grip is what keeps it all from falling apart. It’s easy to look around at a life that’s standing firm and think, I did this. But that feeling of stability.. that can be deceptive.

Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. — 1 Corinthians 10:12

    The Briefing

There’s a quiet danger in the good seasons, isn’t there? Paul’s words here are a direct warning to the person who feels like they’ve finally got it together. The one who thinks, 'I'm standing firm.' He’s basically saying, 'Hey, the moment you feel most stable, that is when you’re most in danger of a total collapse.' It’s a hard truth to sit with. Here's what gets me: this verse reveals that God’s grace isn't a savings account we build up. It’s not an asset we accumulate through good behavior that we can then draw on later. No, His grace is a constantly flowing stream. The moment we stop drinking from the source and start admiring the little cupful we’ve collected, the lamp starts to smoke. God is always the fountainhead. He is the continuous, unending supply. Our spiritual life isn't about having a full tank; it's about staying connected to the pump. The real liability, then, isn't weakness. It's the illusion of strength. When we think our faith, our love, our discipline is something we possess, something we've 'built', we’ve fundamentally misunderstood the transaction. Those graces are the evidence of our connection to Christ, not a balance in our own name. And pride in our own standing has a terrifying compound interest. It grows silently, until the cost is a catastrophic fall. It’s the subtle shift from depending on the Giver to admiring the gift. So what does this mean for us on a Saturday in June? It means that every good thing in your life right now, every bit of patience with the kids, every moment of peace, every act of service, is a direct deposit from Heaven. It’s not your earnings. It’s His provision. The goal isn't to stand on our own two feet. Honestly? It's to live in such a way that we are constantly leaning on Him, knowing that He alone upholds us.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

Let's make this practical... The opposite of 'standing' on your own effort is resting in His. It’s a transaction of trust. Try this: Find five minutes today where you can be totally still. No music, no podcast, no list-making. Just silence. Your only job is to receive, to let God be the source, not you. It’s a small investment with compound interest for the soul.
"Dear Lord, it is so easy to look at our lives and think we built this. To believe our own two feet are what hold us up. Forgive our self-reliance. Quiet the restlessness in us that comes from trying to manage our own accounts. Help us live today not on yesterday's balance, but on Your minute-by-minute supply. Uphold us, because you alone can. Let that truth take root in us today. In Jesus' name... Amen."

“Bankruptcy.” This notion of an emptied ledger, despite outward industry, recalls the Desert Fathers on *acedia*—a spiritual lassitude that often masquerades as diligence. A quiet observation for the afternoon.

Whew! Just wiped yogurt off the wall, and this hits. A “good week” can still feel so hollow inside. Nobody talks about that! Yes Lord. Can I get a witness?

You don't have to carry it alone.
