Hey there. It's Tuesday, and maybe you're already feeling it, that sense of being busy but not actually moving. You see it on the commute, right? A river of red brake lights, everyone 'driving' but no one getting anywhere. It's the perfect picture of a certain kind of avoidance. You're busy enough that the half-heartedness is invisible to everyone else. But you can feel it, that low-grade hum of just going through the motions.
He did it with all his heart and prospered. — 2 Chronicles 31:21The Briefing
Notice the directness here. Ezra doesn't give us a long, floaty explanation. He just lays out the timeline, a simple cause and effect: Hezekiah went all-in with God, and things went well. It's presented almost like a law of spiritual physics. God has designed a universe where certain things are true. He honors commitment. He responds to engagement. He isn't looking for perfect performance or a flawless resume, He's looking for a whole heart. Here’s the thing, this isn't just about trying harder. God doesn't give harvests to people who just stand in the field worrying. But He also doesn’t give them to the idle, right? He blesses the one who actually puts the spade in the ground. The Holy Spirit is a partner in our work, not a replacement for it. He helps our weakness, but He doesn't enable our apathy. He loves an active faith. The most useful people in the story of God are rarely the most talented. They are the most zealous, the ones whose hearts are on fire for the work right in front of them. And this pattern, this principle, isn't just an Old Testament artifact. It points toward the most wholehearted act in all of history. When Jesus said, “The zeal for your house will consume me,” He meant it. His work was the definition of wholeheartedness. He held nothing back. He poured out His life, sweating drops of blood, not out of grim duty, but out of a fiery, focused love. He didn't just do the work of salvation, He was the work. And if He was that earnest for us, how can we be lukewarm in our response to Him? That feeling of emptiness we often carry isn't from a lack of activity, it's from a lack of wholehearted presence in the life He's already given us.

Let's put this into practice... Practically speaking, your heart is going to crave an escape today, scrolling, zoning out, anything but being present. When you feel that pull, that's the moment. Stop and audit it. Ask out loud: 'What am I avoiding right now by wanting this distraction?' Name the real task, and then give it just five minutes of your whole heart."Gracious God, you have designed a world that rewards a whole heart. You aren't asking for more from us, but for all of us. Forgive our fragmentation, our tendency to give you pieces of our attention while we keep the rest for ourselves. We claim the promise that when we bring our whole heart to the work You give us, You bring Your blessing. Give us the courage to do one thing with all our heart today. In Jesus' name... Amen."

That bit about just “going through the motions”… sure it’s an easy trap to fall into, isn’t it? Especially when life gets busy or you’re tired, or even just when routine sets in properly. All those years in the parish, you see it sometimes, don’t you? The motions are good, they give our faith its lovely structure and colour, but the heart truly has to be in it for it to have any favour. You’re spot on there, dear writer. Keeps us honest, this does. Brilliant altogether, thank you for the wee reminder. God is good.
