Moses, Genesis: Righteous Suffering, Mercy's Call, True Peace
Good to have you back. Yesterday, we hit on understanding Scripture through Jesus. But today, we need to go deeper... We’ve all been there... trying to do the right thing, trying to move forward, and then... friction. Maybe it’s an unexpected delay at the border, a system error blocking your payment, or just a situation where you feel completely misunderstood, and honestly, a little targeted. You’re doing your part, you’re following the rules, maybe even serving others, and then BOOM—an invisible barrier, or worse, outright hostility. It leaves us with a quiet ache, doesn't it? A question about why things have to be so HARD when we're trying to be good...
"Abel was a keeper of sheep." — Genesis 4:2The Briefing
There’s a pattern here if you look closely... Moses records something PROFOUND about Abel. He was a shepherd, serving The Lord, offering a sacrifice of blood. It’s a striking image: someone doing good, honoring The Lord—and then hated. Targeted. And ultimately, slain by his own brother. It's that familiar friction we feel when doing what's right meets undeserved resistance, isn't it? Like hitting that unexpected delay when your intentions are pure. But Moses shows us more than just tragedy here. Abel’s story is like a distant blaze on the horizon, pointing us toward a greater truth. His blood spoke, not of vengeance, but a foreshadowing of mercy. It’s a primal echo of Jesus, our true Good Shepherd. Jesus also walked through a dark valley, hated without cause, laying down His life for us. He offered a perfect sacrifice, His own blood speaking peace—peace to our conscience, peace between us and God, peace across all eternity. His suffering wasn’t a dead end; it was the ultimate foothold for our redemption. It transformed the deepest injustice into the greatest act of love. Just like that frustrating real-world friction, this passage shows us that even in the face of malice, The Lord's plan for mercy is ALWAYS at work, guiding us to our true north...

Here is your next step... We often wander off the trail, don’t we? Caught in the thicket of frustration, especially when good intentions are met with bad outcomes. Today, let's re-orient our internal compass. Picture yourself doing this: take five minutes, maybe during a commute or while the coffee brews, and intentionally immerse yourself in the story of Abel. Read Genesis Chapter 4. Pay attention to how Moses describes Abel's heart and The Lord's response. It’s not about finding a perfect intellectual understanding, but letting the story resonate. It’s about letting that ancient blaze guide your thoughts, allowing The Lord to lay down a new foothold in your spirit, even if it feels like just a small step. Even a five-minute glance at the text can begin to re-align your true north..."Let's wrap this time in prayer... Jesus, sometimes it's so hard to see beyond the immediate friction, the unfairness that crops up when we're trying to do right. We ask that you soften our hearts today, Lord. Help us to see the people around us—even those who cause friction or hatred—with Your eyes, not our own. Help us to extend grace, knowing that Your mercy is the TRUE north for us all. Give us the strength to respond with peace, even when we want to react with anger. Remind us that Your blood speaks peace, and enable us to be vessels of that peace in our everyday interactions. In Jesus' name... Amen."
