Isaiah 53 and the Work That Cannot Fail
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
Back for your daily touchstone? I love to see it. Here's a question I've been wrestling with: why do we keep pushing on doors that are clearly locked? You know the feeling. We're managing something that resists management, whether it's at work or at home, and honestly, the resistance is wearing us down. We think if we just try harder, push smarter, it will finally give. But what if the whole point isn't about our strength at all?
He shall see His seed; He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. — Isaiah 53:10The Briefing
That last phrase from Isaiah is just.. pure oxygen for a tired soul. 'The pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.' Let that sit for a second. It's not a wish. It's not a hope. It is a declaration of something that is already happening. Isaiah is essentially saying that God's purpose, His delight, His entire redemptive plan,it will succeed. And notice whose hand it prospers in: His Son's. Here's the thing. So often, we live like the success of God's kingdom depends on us. On our effort. On our strategy. We feel the gridlock in our own lives, the stalled project, the broken relationship, the spiritual dryness, and we assume God's plan must be stuck in traffic, too. We're trying to navigate by dead reckoning, guessing our way forward, hoping we're making progress. But we get so worn down by the resistance, we forget the mission was never ours to manage in the first place. This text from Isaiah gives us the true compass heading. It tells us that God's pleasure is not struggling; it's prospering. His kingdom is not shrinking; it's advancing. His Son is not failing; He is victorious. This truth doesn't dismiss our work, but it reorients it completely. Our job isn't to create the momentum. It’s to align ourselves with the momentum that already exists. Our prayers and our work become less about our own desperate striving and more about joining a river that is already flowing toward the sea. The victory is not in question. It's guaranteed.
⚔️ Your Mission
So, what do we do with this?... Before you look at your phone, before the inbox sets your compass heading for the day, give God the first five minutes. Don't pray for your own needs. Pray this promise back to Him. Say it out loud: 'Lord, let Your pleasure prosper today. Extend the kingdom of Your Son.' Ground your day in His victory, not your effort."Let’s turn our hearts toward home for a second... Heavenly Father, we claim this promise today. We declare that Your pleasure will prosper, that Your kingdom will come. Our hands get tired, but the work is in Your Son's hands, and they are never tired. Settle our striving souls and align our hearts with the victory You have already secured. Let that truth be our true compass heading today. In Jesus' name... Amen."

The *energeiaof God is never thwarted, unlike our own faltering efforts. Maximus the Confessor often distinguishes between the divine will (which is always achieved) and human gnomic will. To contemplate *that which cannot failis to glimpse pure, unadulterated divine purpose. A profound stillness.

There is something about work that cannot fail. Like the deep, steady current I watched this morning by the water. It just holds everything. So much peace in that knowing. ✨
