Ruth 2 and the God of the Leftovers

Good to have you back. It's Wednesday, the halfway point of the week. I was pulling weeds in the garden this weekend, just mindless work, right? And I couldn't shake this feeling.. this sense of wonder. I felt more alive than I had the week before, and I couldn't really put my finger on why. It wasn't one big thing, just this quiet, settled fullness. It's a strange and wonderful thing when the work of your hands ends up preaching a sermon to your head.

Now check this out.. The language Samuel uses is so simple it’s easy to miss. He says Ruth ate, she was satisfied, and she left some behind. There were leftovers. Here's the thing.. this isn't just about a generous lunch. This is a picture of the very character of God. He is not the God of ‘just enough’, He’s the God of more than enough. His generosity isn’t practical; it’s lavish. It overflows. He doesn't just meet the need; He spreads a feast that leaves baskets of fragments behind. Let that sit. God’s default setting is radical, over-the-top abundance. And that changes everything, right? Because this isn’t just about bread in a field. It’s about grace. We come to God feeling like broken shards, like an empty vessel, completely convinced our sin is too great, our past is too messy, our need is too deep. We think we need every last drop of grace just to get clean. But we come to His table and find that His merit isn't just sufficient, it's redundant. We are filled, and there is grace left over. We are forgiven, and there is forgiveness to spare. There are parts of His goodness, depths of His love, that we haven't even tasted yet, because we simply can't bear them now. There's always more. Think about that. We live in a world that screams scarcity from every screen. You’re not enough, you don’t have enough, you’re falling behind. And we can drag that noise right into our prayer lives, asking for just enough strength to get through this Wednesday, just enough patience for the next meeting. But God is offering a feast. The invitation is to come and be 'sufficed', completely satisfied, and then to look around and see the leftovers. To realize His peace, His presence, and His power aren’t measured in teaspoons. Some mornings you just need to be reminded what's already yours. An abundance you couldn't possibly exhaust.
